CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I could still hear the chants. Could those affect me outside the walls? I wasn't going to take any chances. Ignoring how tired I felt, I made myself run. I headed for the carnival. So much for the fun I had planned to have the next day with the humans.

To think that if I would have just stayed with the people I had worked with all day, I would have had a pleasantly boring night. Why hadn't I? If I had, Ana wouldn't be held captive by vampire hunters. What did they want with her anyway? She was just a human. That much was obvious.

When I arrived at the carnival, I stopped near the edge to rest. My head had cleared and my senses all seemed to actually be back to normal. Not like when I had been outside the town walls. Everything had still been under the town spell.

The sounds and smells of all the freshly pumping blood made my mouth water. Pressure grew in my eyes, telling me that my eyes were turning red. After all the stress I'd just endured, I needed blood. That's what would help me get back to normal—for real. Even this far from the town walls, I couldn't allow myself to trust that my senses had gone back to where they were supposed to be.

Blood would finally be my true reset. I looked around. Most of the games and rides were in the process of closing down. People lingered around in groups, drinking and laughing. I couldn't find one solitary human anywhere. I'd destroyed the one that had been here.

Having had little experience with mind control, I didn't want to deal with a bunch of people at once. I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with two. Probably after I had some practice, I would be fine. Actually, I would likely be okay right then had I not been tainted with whatever the hunter's town had cursed me with.

I walked around the edge of the carnival.

"Hey, you!"

I turned around to see Ana's brother. Guilt ran through me, but I kept a straight face. "Who are you?" I asked, feigning stupidity.

"Seriously? Ana's brother. Where is she?"

"I didn't know you wanted me to babysit her. I took her on some rides. She liked that death trap attached to a rubber band. We parted ways. Sorry, I can't help you."

The scent of worry danced around my nose. It was similar to Ana's, but nowhere near as sweet. "I can't find her anywhere."

"Maybe she went home." I shrugged. "She had her fun."

He frowned. "No, she didn't want to go home. I'm pretty sure she was looking to run away."

"Why?"

"She's never been happy there." He sighed. "For some reason, she's never really fit in with us. And to make matters worse, Dad has always so strict with her. Mean, almost. I don't get it—he's never been that way with any of the rest of us. She says he wants to get rid of her, and I can't argue with her on that.
